Newborn Wakes Up When Put Down? Here’s Why (and How to Help)

You finally get your baby to sleep.

You carefully lower them into the bassinet.

And then… eyes open.

If this is happening over and over, it can feel incredibly frustrating.

Why babies wake when put down

There are a few key reasons:

1. Loss of contact
Your baby goes from warm, close contact → to being alone.

2. Startle reflex
Newborns have a strong reflex that can wake them instantly.

3. Sleep cycles are short
They’re not in deep sleep for long.

What actually helps

Slow the transition
Lower feet first, then body, then head.

Keep your hands on them
Rest your hands on their chest for a moment after putting them down.

Swaddling (if appropriate)
This can reduce the startle reflex.

The bigger picture

This isn’t a “bad habit.”

It’s early development.

And it won’t last forever, even though it feels endless right now.

If you’re exhausted…

You’re not meant to figure this out alone.

Support, reassurance, and realistic strategies can completely change how this phase feels.
